Ferry from Hull to Amsterdam
There is no direct ferry between Hull and Amsterdam, but the practical answer is barely less convenient: P&O’s overnight crossing to Rotterdam Europoort, followed by roughly an hour on the motorway. You sleep through the North Sea and do the last 53 miles fresh the next morning. Travellers who want to dock closer to the city can compare the Newcastle to IJmuiden route, which lands 20 miles from Amsterdam.

We found this to be a pleasant and relaxed crossing with a well-timed schedule. It is particularly well suited to travellers with a car, campervan or motorcycle, as onward travel options for foot passengers are somewhat limited from the arrival port.

In our experience, this is the most enjoyable ferry crossing to the Netherlands. It feels like part of the holiday rather than simply a means of transport and is also popular as a mini-cruise. The only drawback is that it leaves you slightly farther from many Dutch destinations than some of the other available routes.
Who sails the alternatives
P&O Ferries sails every evening from Hull to Rotterdam Europoort, arriving the following morning after a crossing of around eleven hours. Cabins are included for all passengers, and cars, campervans, motorcycles and foot passengers are carried.

Onboard experience
The overnight format is what makes this route work for Amsterdam: dinner on board the Pride of Rotterdam or Pride of Hull, a proper bed, and a full day ahead of you when you arrive. We find it a far gentler start to a city break than a dawn drive to the southern ports followed by hours of continental motorway.

From Rotterdam Europoort, Amsterdam is around 53 miles: the A15 east, then the A4 north past Delft and The Hague, typically an hour and ten minutes outside rush hour. Leaving the port straight after disembarkation puts you at the edge of the Dutch morning peak, so a relaxed breakfast on board can actually save you time on the road.
By car
The drive from Europoort to Amsterdam is simple motorway all the way and toll-free. Two practical notes from experience: the port area exit is well signposted but industrial, so trust the signs rather than your instincts, and weekday mornings add 15 to 30 minutes around The Hague. Park-and-ride sites on Amsterdam’s ring road are far cheaper than city parking.

By campervan
Many campervan travellers take this route and head straight for the Amsterdam area; Camping Zeeburg is one of the best-known bases, and you can be there before midday. Leaving the van at the campsite and taking the tram in is the standard play.
