Ferry from Dover to Rotterdam
There is no direct Dover-Rotterdam ferry, but for travellers in the Southeast the combination still works: a short hop to Calais or Dunkirk, then motorway through Belgium into the Netherlands. It is more driving than the direct routes from Harwich or Hull ask of you, in exchange for the cheapest and most frequent sea crossing on the coast.

We’ve travelled on every ferry route between Dover and the continent ourselves. We were particularly impressed by P&O Ferries thanks to its competitive fares, modern ships, clean facilities and spacious outdoor decks. For many travellers heading to the Netherlands, this is often the fastest and most affordable option.

The daytime crossing takes up a large part of the day, but it is often one of the more affordable options available. Budget-friendly cabins are frequently offered, giving you a private space to relax during the journey.
Ferry services from Dover to Rotterdam
P&O Ferries and Irish Ferries cross from Dover to Calais in around 90 minutes; DFDS serves Calais and Dunkirk, the latter taking about two hours. Between the operators there are sailings day and night. The direct alternatives are Stena Line via Harwich and Hook of Holland or P&O’s overnight Hull-Rotterdam crossing.

Onboard experience
Short and businesslike: the Dover boats exist to move you, not to host you. That said, all three operators run modern ships, and ninety minutes is exactly enough for a meal and a turn on deck before France appears.

The route passes the Antwerp ring, which slows sharply in rush hour; mid-morning or early-afternoon arrivals cruise through.
By car
From the M25, this route wins on flexibility: miss a sailing and another leaves within the hour or two. The price is around three hours of continental driving. Belgian and Dutch motorways are toll-free for cars; watch for the tolled Liefkenshoektunnel that navigation systems sometimes offer around Antwerp, and fill the tank in Belgium where fuel runs cheaper.
