Ferry from Dover to Hook of Holland
No passenger ferry sails between Dover and Hook of Holland, so the choice is really between two journeys. Cross from Dover to France and drive around 200 miles north through Belgium, or start ninety minutes up the coast at Harwich, where the only direct ferry to Hook of Holland departs. If Hook of Holland is your actual destination, Harwich usually wins; Dover makes sense when the drive through Belgium suits your wider plans.

For many travellers heading to the Netherlands, this is often the fastest and most affordable option.

The daytime crossing takes up a large part of the day, but it is often one of the more affordable options available. Budget-friendly cabins are frequently offered, giving you a private space to relax during the journey.
Ferry services from Dover to Hook of Holland
Dover offers crossings to Calais (P&O Ferries, Irish Ferries, around 90 minutes) and Dunkirk (DFDS, around two hours), with sailings throughout the day. The direct alternative is Stena Line’s Harwich-Hook of Holland route, with a daytime and an overnight sailing.

The drive to Hook of Holland
From Calais or Dunkirk, Hook of Holland is roughly 200 miles: motorway through Belgium past Antwerp, then into the Netherlands on the A4 and A20. Count on three to three and a half hours of driving, with the Antwerp ring the usual slow spot in rush hour.
By car
Driving via Dover trades ferry time for road time: the shortest crossing but the longest continental drive of the Dutch options. It suits travellers who want maximum schedule flexibility or plan stops in Belgium on the way. Fuel up in Belgium rather than at French motorway stations, and expect the Antwerp ring to crawl at peak times.
