In our experience, this is the most enjoyable ferry crossing to the Netherlands. It feels like part of the holiday rather than simply a means of transport and is also popular as a mini-cruise. The only drawback is that it leaves you slightly farther from many Dutch destinations than some of the other available routes.

DFDS operates the daily overnight crossing from Newcastle to IJmuiden, with cabins included for all passengers. For a sailing that docks at Hook of Holland itself, Stena Line’s Harwich route is the only direct option.

The Newcastle boat gives you the long, easy version of the North Sea: around 16 hours with dinner, entertainment and a proper night’s sleep. Passengers from the North of England and Scotland get the added luxury of a short drive to the port at both ends of the trip.
An hour down the Dutch coast
From IJmuiden, Hook of Holland is roughly 55 miles south: the A9 past Haarlem, then the A4 and A20 through the edge of the Randstad, about an hour and ten minutes outside the peaks. Haarlem and Leiden sit right on the route and both deserve a stop.
By car
Drivers from the North save the entire haul to the southern English ports. On the Dutch side, the hour south from IJmuiden runs through pleasant country rather than industrial sprawl; leaving after the morning rush makes it a genuinely enjoyable drive.
