P&O Ferries sails from Hull to Rotterdam Europoort every evening, arriving the next morning: the North of England’s own front door to the continent. Cabins are included, dinner is aboard, and you wake up with the whole of the Netherlands (and the roads on to Belgium and Germany) in front of you.

We found this to be a pleasant and relaxed crossing with a well-timed schedule. It is particularly well suited to travellers with a car, campervan or motorcycle, as onward travel options for foot passengers are somewhat limited from the arrival port.

In our experience, this is the most enjoyable ferry crossing to the Netherlands. It feels like part of the holiday rather than simply a means of transport and is also popular as a mini-cruise. The only drawback is that it leaves you slightly farther from many Dutch destinations than some of the other available routes.

The only operator currently sailing between Hull and the Netherlands is P&O Ferries. The route is operated as an overnight crossing using the Pride of Hull and Pride of Rotterdam.

After arriving in Rotterdam Europoort, you can continue your journey by car, public transport or taxi. Travellers with their own vehicle can reach many Dutch destinations within a relatively short drive.

The overnight format means you start your Dutch driving fresh, which matters: the first miles out of Europoort are where British drivers adjust to driving on the right, and the morning rush around Rotterdam is real.

Heading south towards Belgium, some navigation systems route you through the small Kiltunnel near Dordrecht: it is tolled, payment is online afterwards, and forgetting costs more than the toll. Dutch motorways themselves are toll-free, with average speed checks and a 100 km/h daytime limit.
